• The fact that Israel Police is busy suppressing protest instead of upholding the law and protecting people's right to protest no longer surprises anyone. Yesterday too, police officers violently arrested protesters demonstrating on the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv road, demanding the establishment of a state commission of inquiry. The courts may release the detainees and criticize the police, but without punitive action against officers who continue to ignore their rulings, the police will not recover from the Kahanism rotting it from within. • My heart goes out to the families who cried out in pain today in the face of an obtuse, cruel and reckless government. The horrific stories of the massacre and captivity, the scale of the failure, and the total indifference to every basic duty to stand before the bereaved families and the families of the hostages are unbearable. We bow our heads, share the families’ grief, remember, and promise not to forget and not to give those responsible a moment’s rest until we receive a full, comprehensive and exhaustive accounting.

• Mordechai David’s gang of thugs came to the Tel Aviv Cinematheque this evening to shut down the Solidarity Festival for Cinema and Human Rights. Since David and his friends have already attacked members of Knesset and journalists without any proper enforcement action, it can be assumed that the police’s negligence in dealing with them is deliberate and planned. The Tel Aviv District Commander, Superintendent Haim Sargrof, should be dismissed over this professional negligence.
