New article // Issue 64 Anat Shalem’s article examines pregnancy as speculation, addressing two forms of speculation about pregnancy that became prevalent in discourse in Jewish Israeli society during the war — the possibility that the female hostages were pregnant, and the prospect of an expected “baby boom” during the war. Shalem asks how these speculations were used to cope with the temporal crisis of war, and shows the connection between pregnancy and attitudes toward the future, as well as the implications of using the experience of pregnancy for women’s bodies and lives.

New article // Issue 64 In a new article to be published in issue 64 of Theory and Criticism, Louay Watad examines the role of fantasy in contemporary Palestinian children’s and young adult literature, asking how fantastical elements operate in a reality shaped by occupation, incarceration, separation barriers and ongoing violence. The article addresses three works: “The Dragon of Bethlehem” by Huda al-Shawa, “Dum Dum Dum” by Kawthar Saeed and Manar Nairat, and “The Story of the Secret of the Olive” by Walid Daqqa. Through an analysis of the dragon, Pegasus and the speaking olive tree, Watad shows that fantastical elements do not negate reality

In a new essay to be published in issue 64 of the journal, researcher Manal Abu Haq examines what happens to psychoanalysis when a state employs extreme mass violence that leads to the radical dehumanization of a civilian population. In the essay, Abu Haq responds to writers from Israel’s psychoanalytic community, including Dana Amir, Merav Roth, Eran Rolnik and others, asking whether psychoanalysis can continue to be a discourse of listening, or whether it has been wholly absorbed into discourses of power. And can a new ethics of listening be created—one that carries within it the fracture of what cannot be restored? Link to read in the comments >>

New article // Issue 62 Assaf Bondy’s article, written for issue 62, which has just been released in print, is being published on the journal’s website as the “one hand washes the other affair” unfolds at the Histadrut, providing the social-institutional background for understanding it. In his article, Bondy examines the revival of workers’ organizations in recent decades as a product of renewed partnership relations between workers’ organizations and political parties. Bondy analyzes the Israeli case, in which a political alliance developed between the General Histadrut and the Likud party at a time when Likud adopted distinctly populist characteristics. He shows that these alliances, based

New article // Issue 62 Maayan Keren-Raveh’s article from issue 62 of the journal examines the unique theological discourse that has developed among Palestinian Christians since the First Intifada. Raveh shows that, from a marginal yet reflective position, Palestinian theologians offer a new reading of the Bible: one that dismantles narratives linking biblical Israel to the modern State of Israel, and offers alternative interpretations that emphasize justice and liberation as foundational elements of the biblical text. The article points to the way this theology seeks to establish, at one and the same time, the historical and religious legitimacy of Palestinian Christians
