• Today, the 16th of Heshvan, Israeli citizens are going to exercise their democratic right at the ballot box — and the Hebrew calendar reminds us of something that almost no one notices: Exactly 57 years ago on the same date, 16 Heshvan 5730, October 28, 1969, elections were also held in Israel. The Alignment, led by Prime Minister Golda Meir, won the elections with an all-time record of 56 seats out of 120. Almost half the votes for a single list. Since then, no list or party has reached a similar number. Fifty-seven years have passed, the political map has changed from end to end, and the record still has not been broken — so maybe it will happen this time? Happy Election Day! 🇮🇱

  היום, ט"ז בחשוון, אזרחי ישראל הולכים לממש את זכותם הדמוקרטית בקלפי-ולוח השנה העברי מזכיר משהו שכמעט אף אחד לא שם לב אליו: בדיוק באותו תאריך לפני 57 שנה ט"ז בחשוון תש"ל, 28 באוקטובר 1969, גם התקיימו בחירות בישראל. בחירות זכה המערך, בראשות ראש הממשלה גולדה מאיר, בשיא מנדטים של כל הזמנים 56 מנדטים מתוך 120. כמעט חצי מהקולות לרשימה אחת בלבד. מאז אף רשימה ומפלגה לא הגיעה למספר דומה. 57 שנה עברו, המפה הפוליטית השתנתה מקצה לקצה, והשיא עדיין לא נשבר, אז אולי זה יקרה הפעם? יום בחירות שמח!🇮🇱

• On Tuesday, October 29, 1957, 4 Heshvan 5718, the government was sitting in a Knesset plenary session, then held at Beit Frumin on King George Street in Jerusalem. A hand grenade was thrown from the visitors' gallery at the government table. The grenade exploded in the plenary hall. Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, Foreign Minister Golda Meir and Transport Minister Moshe Carmel were lightly injured. Minister of Religious Affairs and Welfare Moshe Shapira, one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence, was seriously injured. When he recovered, he added one name to his own: Haim. Sixty-six years later, grenades were again thrown at a member of the Shapira family. On the morning of Simchat Torah 5784, Moshe Haim Shapira's great-grandson, Aner, stood at the entrance to a bomb shelter at the Re'im junction. Staff Sergeant
