  • How can the authority restore community when evacuated residents lose hope? Throughout the war, Mateh Asher residents faced many challenges due to the evacuation: communities weakened by the dispersal forced upon them, the loss of a sense of belonging and distance from the lives they knew. But returning home was also a challenge in itself. The question on the table was: how do you reconnect the communities of the dispersed localities, and how can the connection to the place, to home, be strengthened? The answer lies in a strategy developed in the current cohort by the innovation track of the Bloomberg-Sagol Center, CIVIX and the Mateh Asher Regional Council — to address the challenge of returning

  • This coming Tuesday, we will head out to vote in the Knesset elections, and this is precisely the opportunity to ensure that every vote counts. Do not stay home and do not assume that other people’s votes are enough. Historically, national elections have enjoyed impressive voter turnout rates of 70% to 80%, a figure that proves how important major symbols of nationhood and state are to us, and how much power we have when we choose to make an impact. But there is a democratic paradox here worth pausing over: precisely when elections move to the local level — where it is decided whether we will have well-lit playgrounds, quality educational frameworks or traffic jams on the street — turnout plummets. The gap

  • Three years have passed since 6:28 became 6:29. And today, after three years, we remember those who are no longer with us. Alongside remembrance, there is also longing. Longing not directed only toward those we lost, but also toward the world that was, the men and women we were, the sense of quiet and the innocence that disappeared. At the central memorial ceremony of the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council, Lior Niski, outgoing director of the Bloomberg Initiative for Regionalism, read a personal text he wrote about this longing. We bring you his words in full: “I miss so much. I miss the people who are gone, the friends I lost, the moments that were. But the strongest and most painful longing is

  • What happens when two local authorities decide to act together? One of the major challenges in local government is the ability to move from thinking in terms of “my authority” to regional thinking — and understanding that sometimes the way to achieve more for residents is through partnership. The Golan Regional Council and the Katzrin Local Council are a living (and timely) example of this. The two authorities worked together throughout the process of building a growth plan for the region, presented a joint position and acted from a broad perspective of the Golan as one region. Rather than each authority approaching the government alone with its own needs, they chose to join forces: to work with data, staff work and a professional plan

  • Managerial independence as a foundation for urban resilience in the Rishon LeZion municipality ⬇️ ❓ The challenge: How do you manage a local authority during an ongoing emergency — COVID, military operations, war, the cost of living — when the state sets general guidelines that do not necessarily match the authority’s needs, while residents look to the authority? ✅ The solution: Moving to active local leadership, making independent, on-the-ground decisions, managing budgets and developing independent projects in core areas. And this is what it looks like on the ground: 1️⃣ Taking authority on the ground, such as opening shelters or opening and closing educational institutions according to judgment tailored to the city rather than according to an instruction

  • When Mevo’ot HaHermon, Rosh Pina and the Upper Galilee identified the expected population growth and the burdens of children’s travel in the southern Hula Valley, they decided to do something that requires managerial courage: Join forces. 🤝 At the latest meeting of our project managers and innovation team at the “Paths of the North” school in Elifelet, Lital shared with us the story of “Paths of the North,” a school that opened last September. Instead of each authority trying to solve the hardship alone, they pooled their efforts and, together with the Ministry of Education and philanthropy, created a joint growth engine for the entire region. Later that day, the innovation team presented the projects underway
