Israel’s burial policy is generous and exceptional: it guarantees every citizen an eternal burial plot near their place of residence, funded by the state. But this model is unsustainable. Over the next 20 years, the annual number of deaths is expected to double, and in fact by 2050 more people will die in Israel than have died from the establishment of the state until today. Maintaining existing burial patterns will require thousands of additional dunams—mainly in central Israel, where there are no land reserves on the necessary scale. Even now, Yarkon and Baraket cemeteries are expected to reach full capacity around 2035. This trend requires a fundamental change in burial practices in Israel

Did you know Israel has a water crisis? 🫗 According to a recent survey, around 60% of the Israeli public does not believe there is a water crisis—but this perception does not reflect reality, and Israel’s water sector is in fact deep in crisis. Back in 2008, Israel implemented a water-saving policy that included raising water rates and a broad public-awareness campaign (“Israel is drying up”—remember?), and it worked: household water consumption did indeed decline significantly! But since 2011, with the end of the public-information campaign and the expansion of desalination, the public has developed an illusion of an ongoing abundance in water supply, and household water consumption has returned to an upward trend

In Israel, environmental issues are sometimes pushed aside because of the security situation, but investment in the environment is not a “luxury”—it has a direct impact on social and economic resilience, and on the well-being and health of us all. The health and environment chapter in the State of the Nation Report examines the link between public investment in environmental issues and public health, and presents several structural challenges: 🌱 The share of environmental protection spending in total government expenditure has declined over the years and now stands at only around 1.2%. 🗑️ Most environmental spending is directed toward waste management, with local authorities funding around 92% of it. In international comparison

In 2025, Israel’s education system faced an unprecedented increase in the number of special education students—a reality that led to a significant portion of the Education Ministry budget being allocated to this area. But the problem is not the size of the budget; it is how it is distributed. According to the Shapira Committee’s recommendations, reducing class sizes in mainstream education would enable the integration of students with special needs into mainstream education, using the existing workforce. The education chapter in the 2025 State of the Nation Report highlights the importance of implementing the committee’s recommendations. Here are some of the findings from the study: 🔍 The gap in per-student spending in preschool education
