• Teachers’ hearts are in the right place, but where is the system’s head? While the Education Ministry is stuck in stuttering Zoom calls, Israel’s teachers and preschool teachers are working miracles. With all due respect to their dedication, an education system cannot be based solely on goodwill. We need leadership that knows how to fund these teachers. Instead of coalitionary plunder funds for draft dodgers — reward teachers and preschool teachers in the summer and give children back what they really need: routine, social life and a managed system that works for them. • These are holy days — some have recently been calling them days of gratitude. Perhaps days of hope would be better. Over the past four years, we saw parents and grandparents take to the streets and halt a regime coup; in the face of the bloodthirsty external threat, we saw our young people courageously return from the ends of the earth and go out to fight on every front. This is the foundation of our hope, along with civil society organizations that rose like a phoenix and took responsibility while government ministries were in a coma. In light of all this, and my deep familiarity with Israeli youth and young adults, I am full of hope that we are on the threshold of change. Winds of hope

• March 2026, and the education system is once again copy-pasting the mistakes of the past. Once again schools are being closed, and once again children are being sent to learn on Zoom. It is time to stop with these fake solutions. My proposal to the Education Minister is simple: Stop. Do not fear the teachers’ organizations — do the right thing — extend the school year — our wonderful teachers will be with you.

• Soon another school year will end — another irregular year for our children. And still, even at this complex national moment, the biggest problem in our education system is the severe shortage of teaching staff and education professionals. The path to change begins with generous funding, massive deregulation and making teacher-training institutions innovative and desirable. It continues with immediate action to improve teachers’ status and grant meaningful autonomy to them and their principals, and ends with a paradigm shift in the structure of time and space in schools and preschools. The journey, in which everyone depended on everyone else, united us. It was impossible to dodge service. Precisely this week, many of us once again felt that our definition as a people is cracking, and everyone fighting for its unity suffered a severe blow. The shameful nighttime legislative ambush in the Knesset was a spit in the face of all those fighting those trying to tear us apart from within. The value that “all Israel are responsible for one another,” which brought us this far, is under a fierce and cynical attack.
