President George Washington warned the nation against the dangers of political parties and hyper-partisanship in his 1796 Farewell Address. Loss of national unity, distraction from governing, rule by ambitious leaders who put party power before people, legislative gridlock, polarization, and distrust of government were his key points. Sound familiar? It’s why more than 45%+ of voters nationwide identify as independents, and that number is even higher in the U.P.
