After college I worked in publishing in New York, on romance novels of all things. I've been around books ever since. When Lorelei Books' owner moved out of state, I couldn't imagine Vicksburg without a bookstore, so I kept the business going. I donate profits to local literacy and arts programs, and love seeing a child pick out a first chapter book and watching tourists linger longer than they planned. What's on your nightstand right now?

When Vicksburg-Warren began turning its high schools into college and career academies, the district's four-year graduation rate was 69 percent. Today it's 91. I was pleased to co-chair the initial transformation steering committee, though our teachers and students did the heavy lifting. Behind every point in that climb is a young person crossing the stage with a real start in life. If you can give a school event a wee bit of your time this year, the dividends are remarkable.
