Johnson County deserves fiscal responsibility. The proposed $94.5 million bond doesn’t count more than $30 million in interest payments, which we will pay for with higher property taxes. The rate of incarceration in Johnson County has dropped over the last 15 years. Even with out-of-county transportation costs, it would take over 100 years to realize “savings” from building this big new jail. Johnson County deserves better. Vote NO NEW JAIL Nov. 3.

How did we get to a price tag of $94.5 million? We keep hearing it’s because we didn’t do it 10 or 20 years ago, but this proposal seems out of line with the cost of other county jails in our region, or around the country in recent years. Why are we being asked to spend nearly $100 million when other options are on the table? When similar nearby projects came in at nearly half the price tag? When our jail population continues trending downward? Johnson County deserves choices.

In April, the Board of Supervisors rejected the Historic Poor Farm, out on Melrose Avenue past Highway 218, as a site for a future jail and sheriff’s office for a lot of good reasons, including concerns about how folks might get home when they’re released, and the historical context of the site of the former debtor’s prison and asylum. Then, in July, they agreed to buy land immediately adjacent to it for that use. What changed in three months that this was suddenly the right place to locate a

The $94.5 million cost of the proposed jail and sheriff’s office you’ll see on the ballot ignores the additional $30.2 million in interest. That budget has 📈 increased 16% since it was first presented in 2024. Meanwhile, a Johnson County report that same year pegged the replacement cost of the current building at just $15 million. While the jail is the most expensive part of the building, a large chunk of the cost — 45% according to county officials — is office space. Iowa City’s police dep

The price tag for this is wildly expensive — $94.5 million plus $30.2 million in interest — and it's apparent when compared with other recently built law enforcement facilities. In 2024, for example, Woodbury County opened a new 450-bunk jail, with offices for the sheriff and county attorney, for tens of millions less. Meanwhile, the budget for Johnson County's proposal has ballooned by nearly 20%. Why is this cost so much higher? What has the sheriff eliminated from his wishlist? Why have o

Figures cover domestic political ads paid in dollars, from 4 May 2026. Spend is the sum of Meta’s range midpoints; impressions above one million are reported as “1M+”, so impression figures are floors. Each ad counts in the week its delivery started, with its lifetime spend at our last pull; ads still running before the vote are counted as of 31 October 2026.
