One nation's law, the world's framework In 1973 - the same year as the Endangered Species Act - the U.S. helped lead the creation of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. Today more than 180 countries are party to it, regulating trade in everything from elephant ivory to rare orchids. One country's law became the architecture for a planet's worth of protection. #America250 #CITES #WildlifeTrade #ConservationCountdown #TheEndangeredSpeciesAct #GMFER #marchagainste

92 to 0 December 1973: the Endangered Species Act passes the Senate 92–0 and the House 355-4. Signed into law by President Nixon, it remains one of the most effective conservation laws ever written - credited with helping save the bald eagle, the gray wolf, and the American alligator from extinction. It also did something bigger: it extended U.S. conservation responsibility beyond its own borders, calling for endangered species protection internationally too. #America250 #EndangeredSpeciesAct

The law that started it all 1900: The Lacey Act, signed into law by President McKinley, became the first U.S. federal law to make it a crime to traffic in illegally taken wildlife. It is still active today and remains one of the most powerful anti-trafficking tools in U.S. law. 125 years later, the principle hasn't changed: if it was poached, it can't legally be sold. #America250 #LaceyAct #WildlifeLaw #ConservationCountdown #GMFER #marchagainstextinction Environmental Investigation Agency US

One President. 230 million acres In 1903, Theodore Roosevelt created the first federal wildlife refuge at Pelican Island, Florida - the first of 53 he would establish. By the time he left office, he had protected roughly 230 million acres of American land and water. Roosevelt believed conservation wasn't sentimental - it was patriotic: "The nation behaves well if it treats its natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired in value." #Am

🐬 Iran eyeing mine-carrying kamikaze dolphins to attack US warships in Strait of Hormuz. Vile and cruel. 🐬 Iranian officials are discussing the use of dolphins strapped with mines as living weapons against U.S. warships in the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing naval blockade. Turning sentient, intelligent animals into disposable suicide tools is grotesque animal abuse, not strategy.
